Specialty hard contact lens for eyes in Katy TX

Sometimes a hard contact lens is required to obtain the best vision possible.

What are hard contact lens?

Unlike soft lens, hard lens are lenses that are rigid plastics. They are treated with coatings to help them be wet-able.

Despite this, they are harder lens so they can be uncomfortable. They also are more difficult to fit so are often used when soft contact lenses wouldn't fit or provide good vision for patients.

Why are hard contact lenses needed?

In conditions such as keratoconnus, the cornea has a different shape which makes the surface more irregular. This makes a soft contact lens difficult since it would drape unevenly on the surface.

A hard lens is made custom to they eye surface. So this provides an optimal fit for patients.

What's the fitting process for hard contact lens?

We perform an annual eye exam and a contact lens exam, but the steps of the contact lens exam is different.

We will order a lens based off our measurements of the annual eye exam and then have the patient come back for a follow up where we will try our first custom lens.

There we evaluate the fit to make sure the contact lens isn't pinching the surface, that there's adequate tear exchange, the lens wet ability, the lens movement on the eye surface, whether the lid is attaching to the contacts, and the prescription of the lens.

Any modifications require a new lens that we would then order and the patient would subsequently come back for and the analysis is repeated. We typically attain a good contact lens fit by this visit but if we need to change some parameters, we will do so until we are satisfied.

How do I know if I should be fitted for hard gas permeable contact lens?

An eye doctor will examine your ocular surface, the cornea measurements, the prescriptions, and different contact lenses to determine if hard contact lenses would be ideal for your case.
