What do contact lens cleaners do?

Contact lens cleaners are a critical part of contact lenses. If you aren't using daily disposables then read on about how to clean lenses.

Contact lens cleaners need to

  • Remove debris, proteins, mucous and matter from the lens

  • Disinfect lenses from bacteria

  • Hydrate the lens for comfort

These are divided into multipurpose solutions, hydrogen peroxide based cleaners, and gas permeable cleaners.

Multipurpose solutions

These are what people typically think of when they think to clean their contacts.

  • Can be used for soft and hard lenses

  • Pro's: it cleans, disinfects and hydrates a contact lens. No rinsing needed. Contact Lens sits in one single solution. Affordable. Many product options

  • Con's: has a limit to how clean they can get the lenses to.

  • Examples: BioTrue, OptiExpress, and UniquepH for GP

Hydrogen Peroxide Cleaners

Hydrogen peroxide cleaners uses actual hydrogen peroxide solution to clean the lens. They are used with a special contact lens case that contains a neutralizing component in it to transform the hydrogen peroxide to water.

  • Good for people with allergies or those who put in many hours in a contact lens

  • Pro's: Excellent cleaning ability

  • Cons: Must wait for neutralization process to complete. More expensive

  • Clear Care, peroxicare

Gas Permeable Lenses

Gas Permeable Cleaners are stronger cleaners meant to clean hard lenses. These lenses are prone to more deposits due to how long they are being used for.

  • Will help a Gas Permeable lens last longer.

  • Cons: must rinse, with GP solution. Only for gas permeable lenses.

  • Boston Advanced, UniquePH

Enzyme Cleaners

Enzyme cleaners are typically only used for gas permeables, orthoK or scleral contact lenses. They are even stronger than a daily cleaner and are meant to help with cleaning a surface better to help with wetability and visability.

  • Pros, good to use on older lenses to try to restore original performance.

  • Cons: Can't be used frequently. Must rinse.

  • Boston Enzyme cleaner, Progent
